Why might a security's price, and consequently the securities account value, fluctuate overnight or over a weekend?

The closing price at the end of a trading day and the opening price on the following trading day of securities do not necessarily have to be the same price. Thus, it can happen that the price of a security can also change over the weekend or overnight. This change in price is then naturally reflected in your securities account value.
