Please note that the following answer only applies to clients residing in Germany.

If you are only liable for taxation in Germany, providing your tax identification number (tax ID, TIN) at sign-up is optional. If you do not have your tax ID at hand, it will be automatically requested from the German Federal Central Tax Office. Your capital gains tax will therefore be paid correctly and automatically for you even if you do not provide your tax ID.

If you are liable for tax in a country other than Germany, it is mandatory to provide your tax ID, also known as Tax Identification Number or TIN. This also applies if you pay taxes in several countries, including Germany.
